Rooted in Family Tradition Since 1908
BachScholar®, established in 2008 by Dr. Cory Hall, follows over 100 years of family tradition. The photo on the top (ca. 1925) pictures Andrew and Lillian Hall with their three children, Audrey, Lewis, and Kenny. The multi-talented members of the "Hall's Harmonizers" played virtually every instrument in the modern orchestra. Cory's great grandmother Lillian (second from left) traveled to students' homes on horseback in the Tacoma, Washington area to teach piano. The oldest of the three children, Cory's great aunt Audrey, was a professional violinist and is pictured below with the women's strings group of which she was a member. The youngest member of the family band, Cory's great uncle Kenny (far right), performed trumpet with many of the famous big bands of the 1930s and 40s, worked as an arranger in Hollywood, and subsequently founded a branch of six music stores in the Tacoma area in the 1950s and 60s. Now, fastforward almost 100 years. Cory carries on the Hall family musical tradition into the internet age, achieving on the internet today what his great uncle Kenny achieved in the brick and mortar world sixty years ago. And instead of traveling to people's homes on horseback to teach piano as his great grandmother Lillian did one hundred years ago, Cory is magically beamed into students' homes via Skype. Times have certainly changed; however, connecting aspiring pianists to music in all its glorious aspects has remained completely unchanged!
Cory established the BachScholar® YouTube channel in 2008, which was originally intended to demonstrate his unique and groundbreaking theory of tempo in the music of J.S. Bach. Today, Cory has become one of the world's most popular classical pianists on YouTube garnering over 36 million video views -- with a current average of 20,000+ views daily -- over 72,000 subscribers worldwide, and over 900 performance and tutorial videos. In addition to excelling in the standard classical piano repertoire, Cory is considered by many to be one of the world's leading interpreters of classic ragtime and the music of Scott Joplin.
BachScholar Publishing was established in 2011 and its website went live in August, 2012. BachScholar's goal is to offer piano lessons worldwide via Skype and to produce the world's finest classical piano music for digital download. Dr. Hall (aka "Cory") has since become one of the world's most sought-after piano teachers with students of all ages and levels from more than a dozen countries. (See his stellar testimonials!) In addition, Cory has developed the optimal format and typesetting standards for BachScholar's quality piano sheet music and pedagogical studies. They currently teach and work from their home in Florida.
"Cory Hall played two works of towering artistic content and difficulty with a power and a finish that were startling. Hall was up to it — all over the keyboard, but always conscious of the magic the notes were designed to evoke. It was an impressive performance." (The Sacramento Bee)
Cory Hall, Founder/President
Dr. Cory Hall (b. 1963) is a classical pianist, composer/arranger, recording artist, music editor and publisher, master music engraver, and independent scholar who operates the popular BachScholar™ YouTube Channel, which currently features over 900 performance and tutorial videos that receive 20,000+ daily views worldwide with a total of over 36 million views. Hall is renowned for his pure tone and virtuoso technique, rapid learning abilities, and prodigious memory (with several hundred memorized piano performances) and records on his vintage 1929 Model L Steinway. Hall has many interests and has served many capacities including: concert artist (solo and accompanist), private piano teacher, college professor (humanities, music, piano), church organist, independent scholar. Hall holds music degrees from California State University, Sacramento (B.M. in piano), The Eastman School of Music (M.M. in piano), and The University of Kansas (M.M. in historical musicology, D.M.A. in piano). His major piano professors include Dr. David Burge at the Eastman School of Music and Richard Reber at the University of Kansas. In addition, Hall has participated in master classes taught by some of the world's foremost artists and pedagogues, including: Abbey Simon, Claude Frank, Daniel Pollack, John Perry, Nelita True, Bradford Gowen. During his doctoral studies at the University of Kansas, Hall studied musicology under the late Professor Dr. J. Bunker Clark, a renowned music editor in his own right and scholar of American music. The present publishing company is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Clark, who for many years, even after graduating and moving on, served as Hall's professional mentor who provided much inspiration, encouragement, and advice. In addition to excelling in the traditional classical piano literature, Hall is regarded by many to be one of the world's foremost interpreters of Scott Joplin and classic ragtime music, ca. 1900-1920, which he often livens up and embellishes with his own unique arrangements. Hall has recorded most of Joplin's works on YouTube. As a composer, Hall often combines intriguing blends of diverse styles such as classical, pop, and new age and at other times uses his own unique romantic virtuoso style to create evocative character works, both sacred and secular. Hall's main research interests include tempo and alphanumeric symbolism in the music of J.S. Bach. Still in progress for twenty years is his theoretical treatise "Discovering Bach's Secret Tempo Code", which introduces a groundbreaking theory that determines the precise tempos (in beats per minute) Bach intended for all his works. In 2010 after two years of hard work on the BachScholar™ YouTube Channel, the always visionary and entrepreneur-minded Hall began to have dreams of a new and exciting kind of company. This company would truly be a dynamic and multi-faceted company of the 21st century that takes full advantage of our current online and global world — a family operated business that produces the world's finest classical sheet music and offers piano lessons via Skype to students worldwide. Since 2011, Hall has been a born-again Christian and currently is a member of Grace Lutheran Church in St. Petersburg, Florida. He is a "young earth creationist" who believes in a literal six-day creation, that the earth is only around 6000 years old, and vehemently rejects Darwin's theory of evolution.
